Boards in Jira

 What are boards in Jira?

A board is, simply put, a visual representation of filters. On each board (Scrum and Kanban) there are columns and each of these columns is reflecting the statuses from a workflow in Jira. There are differences when the board is created in Scrum and in Kanban:

  • Scrum board - has default statuses To Do, In Progress, Done
  • Kanban board - has default statuses Backlog, Selected For Development, In Progress, Done

In company managed projects, you can create a unlimited number of Kanban or Scrum boards. In team managed projects, you can only have one board per team managed project. Each board also has the options for quick filters, where the team can be focused on their work. Also, you can distinguish the work based on the colors. If the assignee is John, his cards will be green. If Jacky is the assignee, she will have the red cards and so on. These card colors are based on:

  1. Issue types
  2. Priorities
  3. Assignee
  4. None
  5. Queries - you can use custom JQL queries which will dictate the color of the cards
You can also determine who will be your board administrators. They have the access to the whole section of Configure boards in Jira. One difference between the Kanban and Scrum boards is that Kanban additionally have:

  • Releases - in Kanban for the Done issues you have an option add a release
  • Sub-filters - filters that will give less more organized results from a filter
  • Remove issues from the board after 1, 2, 4 or custom weeks
